forgotten piers

~ The W.D. Lawrence Shipyard, Maitland, Nova Scotia ~

these old rotting logs buried in mud were once a big shipyard pier, from which, in 1874, the largest wooden sailing ship ever built in canada was launched

i love places like this that hold historical significance & present insignificance at the same time

sometimes when i visit these old places i get a pang of sadness, or maybe wistfulness, at first, for a moment

but it doesn’t take long to remember that there has always been selective preservation, it is impossible to save everything, and not all things, saved or unsaved, are meaningful to everyone

instead, i’m grateful that i get to watch this old pier sink modestly into the mud in relative secrecy each time i stop in for a visit… thousands and thousands of tourists drive through every year, they get their ice cream cone at the cafe, they climb all over these old storied and saltworn wooden bones looking for shells and beach glass… but none of them know
